So how smart are bearded dragons? Yes, they are smart, but they do not make good pets. Also, they can be very territorial and this can drive the owner crazy because of the constant fighting. They also have sensitive skin and are prone to getting infections.
Now, onto how smart are bearded dragons in general - Well, they do mimic other Bearded Dragons and generally learn feeding time patterns like other Bearded Dragons. You could easily train it for a certain task through some sort of conditioned reflex action technique. For example, if you intend to feed your Bearded Dragon with food, you could just that by calling it a certain name before giving it the food. If it does not understand you or does not get the name right, it will try again until it gets it. And you could always throw in a bit of positive reinforcement training as well.
Now onto their personal hygiene - These lizards are quite clean, which is good because they can not spread germs from one to another. Their teeth also fall out easily, so you would not have to worry about getting those dead lizards. This is also a plus if you decide to go snake proofing your house. However, these lizards still recognize their environment and will hide away during the day to avoid being caught by predators.
The third trait we are going to look - at is the Bearded Dragons ability to recognize their owners. One of the coolest features of these lizards is that they head bobber. Now this is something that I personally do not approve of, but many owners find this cute. Personally I do not see this as a desirable trait, however, most owners do find this a unique trait and enjoy it. As a matter of fact, many of them head bob their own head back and forth, just like a dog.
If you have never seen a dragon crawl up on its owner - then you are going to have to give these reptiles a wide berth. While they do not make a fashion statement, these lizards are truly fascinating pets. Bearded dragons could open their mouths and screech at anything that crosses their path, and you would be hard pressed to not catch their antics. In fact, some of these critters even chase small rodents and snakes.
All three of these traits listed are related to how smart these pets are - Their intelligence and behavioral tendencies make them unique. They do not do what other reptiles do, such as slouching and staring at everything.
If you are looking for a dragon to keep as a pet, then I recommend you pay close attention to their behaviors. These animals truly make unique pets with their great intelligence and unique behaviors.
